"DO THE ROUGH NUMBERS" for Your Service Area

Example: Population of 20,000

20,000 x 20% (conservative estimate)= 4,000 people with disabilities

or

People with dyslexias (reading disabilities), all ages

20,000 x 15% (based on lowest NIH figures) = 3,000 people with dyslexias

National averages of kids in a community = around 20-25% = 4,000 kids (20%)

= 4000 x 20% = 800 kids with disabilities

People

who are deaf: 4000 x 2% = 80

who are blind: 4000 X 3% = 120

who use wheelchairs: 4000 x 3% = 120

who are visually impaired: 4000 x 9% = 360

with speech, language or cognitive disabilities: 4000 x 11% = 440

with hearing impairments: 4000 x 11% = 440

who have mental illness: 4000 x 23% - 920

who have limited hand use: 4000 x 25% = 1,000

with other mobility problems: 4000 x 27% = 1,080

People with disabilities in a population of 20,000= 4,560

BECAUSE many people have more than one disability

The real thing: Population of your service area: _____________

Total population = ________________ x 20% (national percentage of PWDs) = __________people with disabilities in your service area

or

People with dyslexia = assume 15%, so

_________ people x 15% = ________ people with dyslexia in your service area

National averages of kids in a community = around 20-25%, so

Total population _____________ x 20% = _____________ kids x 20% with disabilities = ___________ kids in your service area with disabilities

People

who are deaf: 4000 x 2% = _________

who are blind: 4000 X 3% = _________

who use wheelchairs: 4000 x 3% = _________

who are visually impaired: 4000 x 9% = _________

with speech, language or cognitive disabilities: 4000 x 11% = _________

with hearing impairments: 4000 x 11% = _________

who have mental illness: 4000 x 23% - _________

who have limited hand use: 4000 x 25% = _________

with other mobility problems: 4000 x 27% = _________

People with disabilities in your service area = _________

NOTE THAT THIS NUMBER IS VERY ROUGH & PROBABLY LOW
